Subject: Human Rights Violations by Pakistan in Balochistan
Dear Mr. President,
On behalf of the Baloch American Congress, I am writing to bring to your immediate attention certain aspects of human rights violations perpetrated by Pakistan in Balochistan that require your urgent consideration.
- Since 2006, thousands of Baloch activists, students, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens have been abducted by security forces and intelligence agencies, often in broad daylight, and held in secret detention facilities. Many of them have remained missing for years, leaving their families without any information about their fate or whereabouts. The authorities have extrajudicially killed thousands of victims of enforced disappearances. From January 2006 to June 2024, there have been 5,433 documented cases of enforced disappearances and 1,534 extrajudicial killings perpetrated by Pakistani authorities. We urge the United States to utilize its diplomatic and financial leverage with the Government of Pakistan to halt the practices of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. The United States should advocate for the immediate release of all disappeared persons and ensure that their families receive information regarding the fate of their loved ones.
- Mosques and religious schools have been established throughout Balochistan with significant state funding. The religious extremists produced by these Islamic schools are not only threatening the socio-cultural traditions of Baloch society but are also being organized as the army’s proxy death squads in their conflict with Baloch nationalist forces. Arbitrarily altering a people’s social and religious outlook contravenes established international norms. We respectfully request that you urge the Pakistani authorities to cease the practice of introducing religious extremism into a secular Baloch society.
- The entry of China as a colonial power is causing unprecedented suffering for the people of Balochistan. Pakistan has handed over the coastal city of Gwadar to China. There are widespread concerns about the long term impacts of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on the region’s demographic balance, cultural identity, and autonomy. This represents a new manifestation of socialist colonialism in Balochistan. We call for immediate action from the United States to help end this socialist colonialism in Balochistan
Excellency,
Balochistan is facing a humanitarian crisis. Pakistan is waging a war in Balochistan without witnesses, as the region has been declared a no-go area for international media and human rights organizations. Many actions of the Pakistani security forces fall within the UN definitions of genocide and crimes against humanity. We request that a fact-finding mission, comprised of members of the U.S. Congress, be dispatched to investigate the
extrajudicial killings and mass disappearances of Baloch political and social activists. It is also imperative that the U.S. government impose relevant bans and embargoes on the perpetrators of these heinous crimes against humanity in Balochistan.
Thank you for your attention to these urgent matters.
Yours faithfully,
Sincerely,
Dr. Tara Chand Baloch
